Obituary - Ralston James Hogge

Ralston (Rollie) James Hogge, 89, of Riverton, Utah, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2024, at Grove Creek Assisted Living Center. Rollie was born on April 12, 1935, in Preston, Idaho, to Ronald and Faung Hogge. He graduated from Logan High School and later earned a master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Utah.

Rollie enjoyed a successful career as a professional engineer, contributing to numerous projects across Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and California. His work was not only a source of pride but a reflection of his dedication to excellence and service.

In 1955, Rollie married the love of his life, Joan Bevan, in Idaho Falls. Their 69-year marriage was built on love, respect, and unwavering faith. Shortly after their wedding, Rollie served a full-time mission in England, and Joan joined him for the final months of his mission. Together, they raised three children, creating a home filled with laughter, love, and faith.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rollie served in many leadership positions, including as Branch President, Bishop, and Patriarch. His faith guided his every decision and touched the lives of many. Rollie was also proud to serve in the U.S. Army and Reserves from 1964 to 1972, achieving the rank of Captain. His military service took him to Fort Benning, GA, Fort Devons, MA, and Two Rock Ranch Station, CA.

In his personal life, Rollie was an avid skier-both on snow and water-and enjoyed playing tennis with his family and friends. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family, and he always found joy in helping others.

Rollie is survived by his beloved wife, Joan; his children: Sue Weeks Ruff (Wesley), Paul Hogge (Becky); and his ten cherished grandchildren: Michael, Jessica, Missy, Natalie, Erin, Joshua, Garrett, Hailly, Katelyn, and Allyssa. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon Steensma, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, David Hogge (Jineena).

A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:45am followed by a celebration of Rollie's life on December 6, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the LDS Chapel, 1208 West 12400 South, Riverton, Utah. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring Rollie's life of love, service, and faith.

Rollie's legacy of kindness, faith, and devotion will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to caregivers Anna and Andrew for their tireless support and dedication during this difficult time.

Obituary - Dirk Eugene Wheat

WATERLOO - Dirk Eugene Wheat, 64, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Oct. 21, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of leukemia.

He was born Aug. 3, 1936, in Iowa City, and was adopted by Wilbur Clark and Cozette Angel Waltz Wheat. He married Lillian Arlene Hickman on May 31, 1958, in rural Eldora.

Mr. Wheat worked at Smitty's Tire and Appliance, Cedar Falls, for 25 years, and was a partner for the past 10 years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in Bordeaux, France, and was director of the Waterloo Bowling Association.

Survived by: his wife, Lillian A.; a son, Tracy Eugene of New Hartford; three daughters, Kathryn Stafford of Lenoir, N.C., Marnae Tucker of Sharpsburg, Ga., and Karyn Salmon of Cedar Falls; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Loretta Standard of Horseshoe Bend, Ark.; three half brothers, Charlie Owens of Waterloo, Mark Wheat of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Dean Wheat of Marion; a half sister, Dorothy Warren of Lady Lake, Fla.; two stepbrothers, Norman Hickman of Conrad and Larry Hickman of Waterloo; and his adopted mother, Cozette Ramey of Grand Junction, Colo.

Preceded in death by: an infant son, Ted Allen; and three sisters, Betty Jacobs, Jeanette Young and Joan Crippen.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hammond Avenue Brethren Church, Waterloo, with burial in Berlin Cemetery, Owasa. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Pence Funeral Home, Newton, is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary - Susan Jane Cahill

Susan Jane Jarvis
(December 23, 1942 – August 25, 2024)

Susan Jane Jarvis, 81, of Bondurant, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 25, 2024, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was born December 23, 1942, in Oelwein, IA, daughter of Clyde and Fern (Bruil) Cahill. She graduated from Upper Iowa University with a degree in Elementary Education in 1965.

Susan married Joseph Jarvis on July 3, 1965, in Oelwein. She worked as an Elementary School teacher for 25 years while raising two children. She retired in 2004 largely due to her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) years before. She fought this disease until the day she passed with grace and dignity and continued to put her family first each and every day through her battle.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clinton where she was active with the women’s groups and church activities. She was devoted to reading her Bible every morning as part of her personal spirituality.

Susan loved playing Scrabble, Yahtzee, doing puzzles, and word finds. In her spare time, she loved spending time with her 5 grandkids and watching Wheel of Fortune. She had a passion for many different charities including The Salvation Army, Feed the Children, Angel Tree, St. Jude’s, and the Animal Rescue League. Over the years, she adored her cats Sally, Charlie, Mojo and Smokey and had a deep love for animals in general.

Over the last 3 years Susan was a resident of The Bridges Nursing Home where she was extremely loved and cared for by the nurses and staff. At The Bridges she regularly attended church to continue her journey in her faith. She also loved playing bingo and enjoyed racking up “Bingo Bucks” to get goodies for her grandkids.

Susan is survived by her husband, Joseph Jarvis of Bondurant, her son, Matthew Jarvis of Phoenix, AZ, her daughter, Annie (Brant) Reyerson of Ankeny, her grandchildren Hadyn (23) and Ian (22) Jarvis, and Emmitt (17), Madden (15) and Breck (11) Reyerson.

She was preceded in death by her brother Michael in infancy, and her only sister and best friend, Linda Hickman who passed away just one day prior to her own passing.

Obituary - Linda Louise Cahill

Linda Louise Hickman, 85, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 24, 2024, at UnityPoint Allen Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born April 1, 1939, in Oelwein, daughter of Clyde and Fern (Bruil) Cahill. She graduated from Oelwein High School in 1957.

Linda married Larry Hickman on August 21, 1966, in Oelwein. She worked as a secretary in downtown Waterloo until her children were born, when she became a stay-at-home mom. She was active with PTA and activities at her children's schools.

She was an active member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and volunteered on many committees over the years. She had a strong faith which she passed on to her children and grandchild.

Linda was an excellent cook. Her greatest joy came from caring for and being with her family. She loved playing Scrabble, Wordle, and Yahtzee. She was up for any board game and her Pictionary drawings are legendary. She was the world's best wife, mom, and Nana. Linda was always positive. In her final days she encouraged her family to keep smiling and to be happy, another example of her always putting her family first.

Linda is survived by her husband, Larry Hickman of Waterloo, her daughter, Pamela Hickman of Waterloo, her son Tom (Mary) Hickman of Topeka, KS, her granddaughter Emma Kate Hickman of Waterloo; and brother-in-law, Joseph Jarvis. Linda's beloved sister, Susan Jarvis died one day after Linda passed.

She was preceded in death by her son Timothy James Hickman, and brother in infancy Michael Cahill.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 29, 2024 at First United Methodist Church-Waterloo, 614 Randolph St. Burial will be in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Obituary - Thomas Lynn Bent

Thomas (Tom) Lynn Bent, 61, of Matthews, N.C. and formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away at home on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Roanoke, Va. and has lived in the Charlotte area since 1971. He was a graduate of Patrick Henry High School and Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke and Pfeiffer University of Charlotte. He was an accountant in the Charlotte area for 35 years. Prior to his own accounting firm and his association with Broniec Associates and Vitex, Inc. of Mooresville, N.C., he worked at Belk Stores Services, Inc. for 26 years.

He was a member of Siler Presbyterian Church, an ordained Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian Church, and served as Church Treasurer and a member of the Visitation Committee of East Presbyterian Church, Charlotte. He was also a volunteer with Junior Achievement and Friendship Trays.

He will be remembered for his enthusiasm of all sporting events, his pride in having a spotless car and his love for his family.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Elsie Ellis Bent; a daughter, Karen Bent Conklin and her husband, Jason, of Waxhaw; a granddaughter, Caroline Grace Conklin (Fifi) of Waxhaw; brother, Stephen Neil Bent and his wife, Holly, of Greensboro, N.C.; aunt, Evelyn Spencer of Cincinnati, Ohio; father-in-law, Manley Ellis and his wife, Eloise, of Monroe, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Helen Sims and her husband, Donald, and Janice McPherson and her husband, Dwight, both of Lancaster, S.C.; and a very special friend of the family, Dawn Martin Thacker and her husband, Andrew, of Roanoke, Va. Also, he enjoyed the special times that he had with his friends, Cliff Cornelius, Charles Jacobus, Gary Griffin, and Mike Stout of Charlotte, Steve Kling of Roanoke, Va. and Amos Irwin of Simpsonville, S.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ibra and Marie Morris Bent; a brother, Gordon Lee Bent; his mother-in-law, Annie Grace Ellis; and special friends, George Martin of Roanoke, Va. and Cliff Caldwell of Charlotte.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Siler Presbyterian Church with visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. in the fellowship hall prior to the service.
